Golf Team Takes WCAL Championship
The men's golf team finished their season at the top of their league, winning the WCAL tournament last week. In late April, the Monarchs were named WCAL Co-Champions after they finished the season with an impressive 13-1-0 league record. This month, the Monarchs won the Ed Ravenscroft WCAL Championship Tournament coming in first place with a score of 387 at Eagle Ridge Golf Course in Gilroy. Senior Matt Lloyd, who signed a national letter of intent to golf for Purdue University, was named the WCAL Most Outstanding Golfer. Several golfers were also named to All-WCAL teams, recognizing them as the best golfers in the league. Congratulations to sophomore Brian Ma, and juniors Wallace Lin and Daniel Kim for being named to the All-WCAL first team and to sophomore Aashish Achanta who was named honorable mention. Good luck at CCS this week!

Swimming and Diving Wins Individual WCAL ChampionshipsSchool Spirit
The Swimming and Diving team earned spots in the CCS trials next week, with several athletes taking home individual WCAL championships. The women's swimming and diving team finished the season ranked No. 2 in the WCAL, with a strong 4-1 league record. Junior Cathy Teng won the 200-meter freestyle WCAL championship and broke her own league record, a fitting way for the junior to end the school year. Cathy wasn't the only junior to show her prowess in the pool as junior Daniel Marella took home the league championship for the 500-meter freestyle. In diving, even younger talent took the WCAL championship as sophomore Tyler Wesson swept the title. These athletes will now compete in the CCS trials this week, at the Santa Clara International Swim Center.

Track and Field Athletes Advance to WCAL Finals
The track and field team participated in the WCAL trials and more than a dozen athletes will be advancing to league finals this week. Congratulations to these athletes who will compete in the WCAL finals for field events on Friday: freshman Amy Arnes and senior Justin McWard in discus, sophomore Haley Jones with the triple jump, junior Philip McCabe for 300-meter hurdles, senior Blake Rose for 300-meter hurdles and 110-meter high hurdles, and seniors Trinity Billingslea and Kevin Rey for shot put and discus. Several sprinters will also advance to the finals, including juniors Philip McCabe and Logan Dawson, who qualified for the 100-meter dash; sophomore Dominic Haggerty, junior Maya Shaw, and seniors Te'Mesha Paxton and Mary Celestin, who qualified for the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes; and junior Emilio Zertuche and senior Mia Rendon, who qualified for the 400-meter dash. In addition to these, sophomore Dimitra Constantin and junior Emily Genevriere qualified for the 800-meter run. The 4x400 relay team also qualified as the No. 1 seed in the league and the CCS. The 3,200-meter and 1,600-meter runs don't have trials, so we'll need to wait for the meet this Friday to see which athletes qualify for the CCS semifinals. Good luck, Monarchs!

Spring Sports Teams Recognized for Top Team GPAs in CCS
Congratulations to our spring sports teams for proving that great athletes can also be excellent scholars. This spring, an outstanding 10 AMHS sports teams have been named CCS Scholastic Championship teams, an honor that recognizes these groups for having one of the top five highest collective grade-point-averages in the section this season. Of the 10 teams, three had the very highest collective GPAs in the section: badminton, men's swimming, and men's tennis. This spring, AMHS had more teams recognized for academic excellence than any other school in the CCS. Great job, Monarchs!

Summer Reading for Summer, 2017

AMHS students are required to read literary selections over the summer in preparation for the upcoming school year. Which specific selections a student is assigned to read are based on his or her enrollment in English and social studies courses. For a complete listing and an informational letter about the summer reading program, visit the school's website, mitty.com; under Quick Links, scroll down to Summer Reading.

Please note: summer reading may be done via digital books or traditional books, whichever a student prefers. Students are reminded that they will be tested on their summer reading selections during the first few days of the fall term.

Summer College Application Essay Required of All Rising Seniors
(Current Juniors)

In an effort to ease the burden that most seniors feel during the fall quarter of their senior year, the school is requiring that each of next year's seniors write a draft of a college application essay during the summer.

Full details can be found on the AMHS website: from the main page, go to "Quick Links" and scroll down to "College Essay Assignment," or use this link.

Basic parameters of the assignment are the following:

1) Each senior must write, over the summer, a draft of what can become a college application essay. He or she may write on two UC prompts; or one Common Application prompt; or a prompt from some other college or university he or she plans to apply to.

2) The essay must be word-processed and turned in to the senior's English teacher on his or her first day of English class in August. The essay must be word-processed and is worth 30 points in the "homework" category for his or her English grade. Late papers are not accepted, except as a result of excused absence; seniors who don't submit the essay as due or who do not show a reasonable effort on the essay (as determined by the English teacher) will receive no credit.

3) The essay, as submitted, will be given to the senior's counselor for review; that way, when the senior meets with his or her counselor in the fall, work has begun on what will evolve into a finalized college application essay.

Aside from all this talk of requirements, this is a great opportunity for seniors to reduce the "crunch" that can come with college applications and their coursework in the fall. It will also enable counselors to work more effectively with seniors as they refine drafts of their college application essays.

In addition, every senior is invited to attend a two-day College Application Essay Workshop:

Tuesday, August 1st, 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Wednesday, August 2nd, 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
(Location will be on campus; precise location TBA, based on number attending)

Full details about attending this free-of-charge workshop, including how to sign up for the workshop, can be found on the AMHS website; from the main page, go to "Quick Links," scroll down to College Essay Assignment; or use this link.

Purchasing Textbooks for the 2017-18 School Year

Students will be able to purchase books for the 2017-18 school year after they receive their schedules in mid-July. To purchase books, a student will log into the Mitty textbook website using his or her last name and student ID number (use the link for the website, above, or go to the school's main website; scroll down the Quick Links to "Book Store"). To ensure that the student has all books in time for the first day of school, all book orders - both digital books purchased via the iPad and traditional books purchased through MBS Direct - should be placed by August 2nd. Please note: MBS Direct will offer AMHS families free shipping from July 19th to August 2nd.

If you have any questions about the book ordering process, please see the school's textbook website or contact Mrs. Kristy Savage, the AMHS textbook coordinator, at books@mitty.com.

Book Buyback
MBS Direct will buy used books at the end of the semester. The company determines which used books it will buy based on the anticipated need for these books for the following school year. Important: book buyback prices are best during the two weeks before and after the last day of classes for the semester. For more information about selling used books to MBS, see this information sheet. Also: click on this link to sell your used books to MBS Direct.
