Student Activities

Senior Ball was a BLAST!
This past Saturday, the senior class danced the night away and enjoyed its Senior Ball at The Fairmont Hotel. This was a special opportunity for students to dress up, take pictures, and reminisce about their time at Archbishop Mitty. A special thank you goes out to the senior class representatives for creating a "Walk of Fame" theme, which everyone enjoyed.

The Senior Cruise is Set to Sail
This Thursday night, May 18th, is the annual Senior Cruise. This is a nighttime sea tour around the San Francisco Bay. With dinner, dancing, movies, and much more, this promises to be a fun gathering for the class. Students need to arrive on campus by 9:30 p.m. to check-in and to receive instructions. The buses will leave soon thereafter, and the expected return to AMHS will be between 5:00 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. on Friday, May 19th, which is Senior Cut Day. Ticket sales end tonight, Monday, May 15th.

Update on the Senior Dinner
We've been receiving inquiries about the Senior Dinner on Thursday, May 25th. This is for graduating seniors ONLY. This event is free of charge. The evening provides an opportunity for the faculty and staff to show their appreciation to the students for four wonderful years and for the students themselves to embrace and share memories. Once again, only members of the Class of 2017 are to attend this dinner. Students should RSVP here.

Track and Field Team Advances to CCS FinalsSchool Spirit
Congratulations to our track athletes as many won their events at the WCAL finals last week, earning spots in the CCS Semifinals next weekend. The women's 4x100 meter relay team won the WCAL finals, taking home the championship for this event. Monarchs also gave impressive performances in the hurdles contests. Senior Blake Rose won first place in the 110-meter high hurdles, before also taking the championship for the 300-meter hurdles. His time in the 110-meter high hurdles event was a personal best and is currently the No. 1 time in the CCS. Finally, congratulations to our sprinters, who represented the school well, with senior Te'Mesha Paxton and junior Maya Shaw finishing first and second in the 100-meter WCAL finals. Several other athletes qualified to compete in the CCS including senior Kevin Ray in shot put, the men's 4x100 meter relay team, and juniors Philip McCabe and Logan Dawson in the 100-meter dash. Congratulations on great
performances and good luck at CCS!

Monarch Swimming and Diving Team Places Among Top 10 Teams in CCS
Congratulations to our swimmers and divers for excellent performances in the CCS finals this past weekend, which included winning individual championships, setting records, and earning spots in the state trials later this month. Several athletes qualified for state in their events including junior Daniel Marella, the men's 200 medley relay, and the women's 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams for swimming, and sophomore Tyler Wesson for diving. The Monarch relay teams did especially well with the men's 200 medley and the women's 200 freestyle relay teams breaking school records for these events at the CCS finals. Junior Cathy Teng gave outstanding performances, taking home CCS championships in two events: 100 and 200 freestyle. She broke school records and qualified for state as the No. 1 seed in these events. Teng also broke a school record in her 50 freestyle leg of the 200 freestyle relay. Overall, the women's swimming and diving team placed third in the CCS, while the men's team finished tenth in the CCS. Congratulations Monarchs and good luck at state!

Summer Reading for Summer, 2017

AMHS students are required to read literary selections over the summer in preparation for the upcoming school year. Which specific selections a student is assigned to read are based on his or her enrollment in English and social studies courses. For a complete listing and an informational letter about the summer reading program, visit the school's website, mitty.com; under Quick Links, scroll down to Summer Reading.

Please note: summer reading may be done via digital books or traditional books, whichever a student prefers. Students are reminded that they will be tested on their summer reading selections during the first few days of the fall term.

Summer College Application Essay Required of All Rising Seniors
(Current Juniors)

In an effort to ease the burden that most seniors feel during the fall quarter of their senior year, the school is requiring that each of next year's seniors write a draft of a college application essay during the summer.

Full details can be found on the AMHS website: from the main page, go to "Quick Links" and scroll down to "College Essay Assignment," or use this link.

Basic parameters of the assignment are the following:

1) Each senior must write, over the summer, a draft of what can become a college application essay. He or she may write on two UC prompts; or one Common Application prompt; or a prompt from some other college or university he or she plans to apply to.

2)The essay must be word-processed and turned in to the senior's English teacher on his or her first day of English class in August. The essay must be word-processed and is worth 30 points in the "homework" category for his or her English grade. Late papers are not accepted, except as a result of excused absence; seniors who don't submit the essay as due or who do not show a reasonable effort on the essay (as determined by the English teacher) will receive no credit.

3) The essay, as submitted, will be given to the senior's counselor for review; that way, when the senior meets with his or her counselor in the fall, work has begun on what will evolve into a finalized college application essay.

Aside from all this talk of requirements, this is a great opportunity for seniors to reduce the "crunch" that can come with college applications and their coursework in the fall. It will also enable counselors to work more effectively with seniors as they refine drafts of their college application essays.

In addition, every senior is invited to attend a two-day College Application Essay Workshop:

Tuesday, August 1st, 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Wednesday, August 2nd, 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
(Location will be on campus; precise location TBA, based on number attending)

Full details about attending this free-of-charge workshop, including how to sign up for the workshop, can be found on the AMHS website; from the main page, go to "Quick Links," scroll down to College Essay Assignment; or use this link.

Purchasing Textbooks for the 2017-18 School Year

Students will be able to purchase books for the 2017-18 school year after they receive their schedules in mid-July. To purchase books, a student will log into the Mitty textbook website using his or her last name and student ID number (use the link for the website, above, or go to the school's main website; scroll down the Quick Links to "Book Store"). To ensure that the student has all books in time for the first day of school, all book orders - both digital books purchased via the iPad and traditional books purchased through MBS Direct - should be placed by August 2nd. Please note: MBS Direct will offer AMHS families free shipping from July 19th to August 2nd.

If you have any questions about the book ordering process, please see the school's textbook website or contact Mrs. Kristy Savage, the AMHS textbook coordinator, at books@mitty.com.

Book Buyback
MBS Direct will buy used books at the end of the semester. The company determines which used books it will buy based on the anticipated need for these books for the following school year. Important: book buyback prices are best during the two weeks before and after the last day of classes for the semester. For more information about selling used books to MBS, see this information sheet. Also: click on this link to sell your used books to MBS Direct.
