CRS RicebowlSchool Spirit

This week, Catholic Relief Services invites us to reflect upon the Catholic social teaching theme of "global solidarity" through its work in Micronesia. In this principle, Jesus tells us to love our neighbors, even though they may be different than us. This includes the neighbors who live next door to us and those who live on the other side of the planet. Jesus reminds us that we are all part of God's great family. To learn more about Catholic social teaching and how CRS Rice Bowl is helping families in Micronesia, please visit crsricebowl.org. Also this week, consider joining your
classmates in fasting from shopping at malls and donate the
amount you might have spent in your religion class!

Join us for this unforgettable night on Wednesday, April 12th, at 7:00 p.m. in the Thomas Kinkade Center for the Arts. Admission is $5. Tickets are on sale now on the Performing Arts Department's website.

IMPORTANT: For Senior Parents - Last Call

The deadline to complete the Graduation Program Scholarship Data Survey for 2017 is this Thursday, April 13th. In order to ensure that your student's information is included in the "Scholarship Awards" and "Honors
at Entrance" sections of the graduation program, please fill out this survey in the "About Me" section of Naviance. An email was sent on March 17th with detailed instructions and sample survey responses. To complete the survey, you must enter your parent account on Naviance/Family Connection. If you do not remember your password, contact Mrs. Nina Duquette in the Counseling Department. If you have questions or need assistance with the survey, please contact Mrs. Lauren Matusich, Scholarship Chair, by calling (408) 342-4319.

Counseling

JUNIORS
The case studies deadline is this Wednesday, April 12th. Please drop off registration forms and checks to Mrs. Nina Duquette in the Counseling Office.

SENIORS
As you hear back from colleges, please update your Naviance account and let your recommenders know the good news.

For California State Universities (CSUs), please make sure to check your specific application portal account for any important to-do items (i.e. missing documentation, housing application, additional testing, etc.). Your counselor does not have access to these accounts, so you would need to notify your counselor if a college is missing information or documents.

FAQ: COURSE PLACEMENTS (GRADES 9-11)
As we wrap up course placements for 2017-18 schedules, please review the following FAQs:

• What if I want to drop an AP/Honors Language course? Parents must email the student's counselor to approve the schedule change.

• I don't see the two science/math classes that I requested on my schedule? "Doubling up" is only possible if the student's schedule allows it and if space is available in the second requested course. After we finalize placements at the end of the semester, students will be placed in their additional classes, if space is available. If a student's schedule has many single-section courses (Speech & Debate, choir, electives, etc.), "doubling up" will be more difficult.

• I didn't meet the required grade for the first semester, but I'm meeting the requirement this semester. Can I change my placement? All placements are based on the prerequisites for both semesters. If you improve this semester, please wait until after finals (when grades are issued) before you contact the Department Chair. In addition, if you do not meet the grade requirement second semester, your placement will be adjusted accordingly.

• I ranked my electives but I'm worried that I may not get my first choice. Your counselor will review your schedule to ensure that you are in the appropriate classes for graduation and college requirements. Given that many elective courses are offered as single-sections, there will be departments where you will not have your top choice. We will do our best to work with your schedule, but there are no guarantees of first choice placement, only that each student will meet the school's required graduation requirements.

• Why is my counselor contacting my parents about my schedule? Counselors will contact a student and his/her parents if we are concerned that a schedule is overloaded. The priority is a balanced, manageable schedule. Counselors will review the HW minutes chart, provide recommendations, and help students manage their schedules.

Participate in Divisional Elections

If your student is a current freshman, sophomore, or junior interested in representing his or her class next year as a student government representative, a MANDATORY meeting will take place at 7:15 a.m. Wednesday, April 12th, in the Thomas Kinkade Center for the Arts. Students can visit the Activities page on myMitty to get details about the election process and to download the application. Still have questions? Stop by Student Activities.

Swimming Team Sets Records and
Divers Finish 1-2

Last Thursday, the women's swimming and diving team defeated St. Ignatius, 96-90. Helping to lead the team to victory was the 400-free relay team of freshman Kylie Juan and juniors Cathy Teng, Sarah Savage, and Sophia Harrison, who broke a 10-year-old St. Ignatius pool record, which had been previously held by a 2007 Monarch squad. During the same meet, Teng also broke pool records in the 200-free and 100-butterfly events and on Saturday at the Catholic School Invite, she broke the meet record in the 200-free. Teng has been undefeated in all the individual events she has competed in this season.School Spirit

At the Brian Tanner Diving Invitational on Saturday, the diving team competed well with sophomore Tyler Wesson and freshman Colin Sullivan finishing first and second, respectively, for the men. Freshman Stephanie Shao came in fourth for the women. Wesson has dominated the competition this year, winning every one of his events in the dual meets.

Baseball Team Finishes Strong Week of Wins

This past week, the baseball team posted victories against both Valley Christian and Riordan with strong pitching and defense. On Tuesday, Archbishop Mitty defeated Valley Christian 3-0 in a 13-inning marathon. The game remained scoreless as seniors Haydn King and JP Caldwell were stellar on the mound and the defense was outstanding, making plays to get three Warriors out at the plate over the course of the game. In the top of the 13th inning, the Monarchs got on board as junior Miguel Cebedo doubled and scored on a wild pitch and later senior Tyler Jochen had a 2-run double to give the team a 3-0 lead that eventually held up. On Friday, the Monarchs continued their winning ways as junior Luke Tillman pitched a three-hit complete game with nine strikeouts against Riordan. The 3-1 win versus the Crusaders marked the third consecutive win for the Monarchs.

First Annual One World Cup Soccer Match Next Month

Campus Ministry is excited to announce that Catholic Charities and Archbishop Mitty have teamed up to host the first annual "One World Cup." This event will be held Saturday, May 6th, and will be an opportunity for 25 refugee foster children living in the Bay Area to team up with AMHS students to play a friendly match of soccer. The purpose of this event is to break down barriers and foster kinship, to raise money for the work Catholic Charities does for the refugee foster program, and to let the wider community know that Archbishop Mitty, Catholic Charities, and the Diocese of San Jose stand with the marginalized regardless of their ethnicity, status, or religion.

Doors will open at 10:15 a.m. and the match will begin at 10:45 a.m. Donations of $10 will be taken at the door to support the Catholic Charities Refugee Foster Program. We hope to see you there!

The poets performed for a very enthusiastic audience that gave snaps of appreciation as each student took the mic. Check out the school's Instagram account to watch video from the event.

Solidarity Dinner
Last week, our Campus Ministry Department also celebrated its annual Solidarity Dinner. This special event was started by students who wanted to gather together and eat a simple meal in solidarity with the numerous people they will encounter on upcoming immersion trips. A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for a beautiful evening of songs, laughter, prayer, and reflection!
