Addressing Student Safety

Maintaining a safe passage for our students, families, and staff each morning and afternoon is an essential component of Archbishop Mitty High School's safety and security plans. Increased daily traffic patterns and late starts in the mornings can at times lead to dangerous driving, jaywalking, or even worse, traffic collisions or injuries. Monitoring traffic in the areas surrounding the school this year, many have witnessed several behaviors that are concerning. To address these issues, an announcement was made to the students asking for their cooperation and support both before and after school. Students were reminded to slow down when driving near the school and to use the crosswalks when walking to or from campus. They were also reminded to make eye contact with drivers when crossing the street in the crosswalks and to follow the traffic patterns that have already been established.

Parents, we would like to ask for your support as well in maintaining the safety of our neighborhood. Here are a few ways where you can make a difference:

• Try to drop off students before 7:30 a.m. for a quick and easy exit.

Refrain from making U-turns on Mitty Avenue since it is unsafe for pedestrians and other drivers.

Drive slowly in front of the school and especially when approaching one of the crosswalks.

• Consider our neighbors by not using or blocking their driveways and driving slowly through the neighborhood.

• Pick up students after the 2:35 p.m. rush to avoid waiting in traffic.

• Designate a location for pick up that is easy to access after school.

We hope that making these small changes will lead to less dangerous behaviors near our school and will ensure that each of our students and families arrives and departs from our school safely.

If you have any questions or concerns about driving in our neighborhood, please feel free to contact the Dean of Students, Jim Fallis, by calling (408) 342-4310, or the Assistant Dean of Students, Ms. Tamara Monson, by calling (408) 342-4366.

Adult Spirituality Series: Catholic Social Teaching -
Vision and Action
School Spirit

THIS Thursday, October 20th, 6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Thomas Kinkade Center for the Arts at Archbishop Mitty High School
Have you ever wanted to know where the Church's teaching on social concerns comes from? Come trace Catholicism's best kept secrets from scripture to modern social justice concerns. Along the way, we will interweave Archbishop Mitty's own mission statement and philosophy, and how that is translated into action on campus in our programs and culture. Mrs. Megan Walker, AMHS religious studies teacher, will be our guest lecturer. The evening will begin with drinks and light hor d'oeuvres at 6:30 p.m. RSVP here.

Student Activities

Spirit Week is Underway!
At the divisional meetings last week, each class discovered its Against All Odds theme for Spirit Week 2016. In their first year, the freshmen will be introduced to the magical world of Neverland with Peter Pan. Sophomores will give their all and represent with The Hunger Games. Juniors must provide food, water, and shelter for themselves in Survivor mode. The seniors will discover the pirate legends and folklore of Pirates of the Caribbean. As always, each class is designated a color for the year. Freshmen wear green, sophomores red, juniors blue, and the seniors wear black. Descriptions of each day's activities and dress themes can be found on the Student Life page under Spirit Week. Spirit Week officially begins on Sunday, October 23rd, with the annual workday on campus from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Students are encouraged to show up and help their classes with painting and artwork. It's a great time for fun and camaraderie.

Spirit Week Shirt Sales
This week, class theme shirts for Spirit Week will be on sale for $10 each. As a reminder, unlike the spirit shirts at the beginning of the year, not all students will receive these shirts. To avoid any confusion or misunderstanding, we want to make all parents aware of this fact. Each class is provided with a limited number of shirts and Spirit Week points will be awarded to the classes that sell out most quickly, so consider this a contest of sorts. The sale of shirts will take place during the lunch periods on Thursday, October 20th.

Homecoming Dance Is Getting Closer
With the Homecoming Dance happening in just two weeks, here are some important details of which you and your students should be aware:

1. The dance will take place on Saturday, October 29th, as the official end of Spirit Week.

2. Guest pass forms are due on Tuesday, October 25th, to Student Activities. Students can always bring them in earlier if they would like to. Tickets for non-Mitty students must be purchased by this date. Click here to access the guest form.

3. TICKETS CAN ONLY BE PURCHASED ONLINE FOR THIS DANCE! No tickets will be sold out of the Student Activities Office or at the door.

4. Ticket are now available for sale online. Click here to access the ticketing login page on the school's website. Sales will run until October 29th at 3:00 pm. Prices will be $10 per person and $20 per couple.

Successful Novice Weekend

The Mitty Speech and Debate Team had an amazing weekend of novice tournaments. On Friday, the novice debaters competed in their first tournament of the year. Congratulations to freshmen Daniel Kim and Mehar Singh, and sophomores Tushar Agashe and Tanvi Bajaj for going undefeated! On Sunday, 25 of our novice speech students advanced to the final round in their event, which is more than twice as many as any other school in the league. Congratulations to the following students who were recognized at the awards ceremony: freshmen Kassidy Jordan, Arushi Lahiri, Madurya Suresh, Joanne Park, Chloe Kenrow, Naman Dandia, Saumil Thakore, Cailey Larmore, Sameer Keswani, and Nicholas Maranowski; sophomores Francesca Zappula, Malavika Ramarao, Anna Wymbs, and Tanvi Bajaj;; junior Giuliano Orsi; and seniors Diego Blanc Zoco, Ana-Gertrudes Gonzalvez, and Emily Goes. Athletics Report

Women's Water Polo Sweeps Invitational
The women's water polo team created some waves this weekend when they won the Tessa Joy Invitational held at Los Gatos High School. The team won their opening game against Willow Glen 11-10, then defeated Notre Dame 17-7, before securing an 8-7 win against Mountain View. The team took the championship match with a 7-6 win against Los Gatos in overtime. Senior Molly Teresi poured in 19 goals during the four games. Senior Goalie Cleo Constantin was the backbone of the team's defense and made an impressive 42 blocks to keep the team on its winning streak. Freshman Arrington McGee helped the team to victory, scoring the winning goal in the championship match in overtime. At the end of the tournament, each team honors the players on their team who best embody the bright spirit of Tessa Joy Davis, the Los Gatos High School water polo player for whom the tournament is named. This year, the Monarchs recognized juniors Sarah Coglitore and Bre Figone for their positive attitudes.

The team's tournament win has been one of several recent victories. Just a week before the tournament on Senior Day, the team defeated St. Ignatius 16-7. Senior Katie Rose scored three goals during the game and just before the buzzer at the end of the second quarter, goalie Cleo Constantin made an impressive pool length shot for a goal. The Monarchs are getting primed and ready for CCS playoffs where they hope to have a deep run.

Women's Golf Team Wins Game Against Saint Ignatius
The varsity women's golf team played exceptionally well this last week. The Monarchs had their biggest win of the season posting a 205-206 victory against St. Ignatius on Thursday. The win puts them in third place in the WCAL. Freshmen Alice Lin and Kylie Juan, who recently were promoted to the varsity team, played well in their debut. The team was led by team captain, senior Clare Brady, who shot a 37, and sophomore Grace Chung, who shot a 40. Earlier the same week, the team placed third out of twelve teams in the Freedom Tournament, held in Brentwood. Clare, Alice, and Kylie all gave strong performances, helping the team to place well in the competition.
