Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowl School Spirit

This week, Catholic Relief Services invites us to reflect upon the Catholic social teaching theme of the "Call to Family, Community, and Participation" through its work in Mexico. In this principle, we remember that human beings are social by nature, and we need each other. We, like the early disciples, are called to come together and grow as a community, whether that community is in our classroom, workplace, or family. To learn more about Catholic social teaching and how CRS Rice Bowl is helping families in Mexico, please visit crsricebowl.org. Also this week, consider joining your classmates in fasting from fast food and donating the amount you might have spent in your religion class!

If you do not remember your password, you may reset it, or you may contact Mrs. Nina Duquette in the Counseling Department. Counseling

SENIORS
As you hear back from colleges, please update your Naviance account and let your recommenders know the good news.

For California State Universities (CSUs), please make sure to check your specific application portal account for any important to-do items (i.e. missing documentation, housing application, additional testing, etc.). Your counselor does not have access to these accounts, so you would need to notify your counselor if a college is missing information or documents.

FAQ: COURSE PLACEMENTS (GRADES 9-11)
As we wrap up course placements for 2017--2018 schedules, please review the following FAQs:

What if I want to drop an AP/Honors Language course? Parents must email the student's counselor to approve the schedule change.

I don't see the two science/math classes that I requested on my schedule? "Doubling up" is only possible if the student's schedule allows it. After we finalize placements at the end of the semester, students will be placed in their additional classes, if space is available. If a student's schedule has many single-section courses (Speech & Debate, choir, electives, etc.), doubling up will be more difficult.

I didn't meet the required grade for the first semester, but I'm meeting the requirement this semester. Can I change my placement? All placements are based on the prerequisites for both semesters. If you improve this semester, please wait until after finals (when grades are issued) before you contact the Department Chair. In addition, if you do not meet the grade requirement second semester, your placement will be adjusted accordingly.

I ranked my electives but I'm worried that I may not get my first choice. Your counselor will review your schedule to ensure that you are in the appropriate classes for graduation and college requirements. Given that many elective courses are offered as single-sections, there will be departments where you will not have your top choice. We will do our best to work with your schedule, but we cannot customize a schedule for every student.

I'm confused about why my counselor is contacting my parents about my schedule. Counselors will contact every student and his/her parents if we are concerned that a schedule is overloaded. The priority is a balanced, manageable schedule. Counselors will review the HW minutes chart, provide recommendations, and help students manage their schedules.

Women's Basketball Team Wraps Up an Amazing Season
The women's basketball team finished its season among the top teams in the nation. The Monarchs rose to the highest level of competition, earning a spot in the CIF State Open Division Championship last weekend, before losing a close contest to Clovis West 44-40. Senior Madeline Holland led the team with 11 points and 7 rebounds and was named the Player of the Game by MaxPreps. Sophomore Haley Jones contributed 10 points and 11 rebounds. This season, the Monarchs captured WCAL and CCS Open Division titles. Additionally, the Monarchs captured the NorCal Open Division Championship, a first for the program. Equally impressive, all four of the team's seniors will be playing basketball at Division I schools in the fall with Daniella Guglielmo and Tahlia Garza attending the University of California, Irvine; Heleyna Hill going to San Jose State University; and Madeline Holland headed for Saint Mary's College of California. Congratulations, Monarchs!

Men's Track and Field Team Tops Serra
Strong individual performances helped the men's track and field team beat the Serra Padres 79-56 last week. In field events, Senior Kevin Ray was the top award winner and took home victories in the shot put and discus events. He wasn't the only Monarch who won multiple contests. Senior Blake Rose won the 110-meter high hurdles and the 400-meter run. Junior Samuel Leather was also impressive with the fastest times in both 1600-meter and 3,200-meter runs.
