Requesting an Advanced Placement Exam for an AP Course You
Aren't Taking

All students who are enrolled in an AP course are required to take the corresponding AP Exam for that course; and nothing is required of those students in terms of ordering an exam to take; the ordering is done by the school. Occasionally, however, a student desires to take an AP exam for a course he or she is not taking. The school can usually accommodate that request, but that requires planning by the school, a written request by a parent, and approval of the request by the school administration.

Therefore, any student who wishes to take an AP exam for a course in which he or she is not enrolled must contact Ms. Lauren Matusich, AP Exam Coordinator, by emailing lmatusich@mitty.com to request that an exam be ordered. The deadline for such requests is January 31st. After the student contacts Ms. Matusich, she will be in communication with the parent(s) and with the administration to authorize the ordering of an exam, since each exam costs $93 and is billed to the student's Mitty account.

Because of the cost of the exam and the resulting missed class time to take the exam, the school does not encourage students to take AP exams for courses in which they are not enrolled. Despite this, plausible reasons for doing so can include any of the following: 1) the AP course for that exam is not currently offered at AMHS and the student has undertaken preparation outside of Mitty for the AP exam; 2) the student wishes to re-take an AP exam from a prior year; or 3) in rare instances, the student has taken non-AP courses and excelled to the degree that he or she is prepared for success on the AP exam.

Athletics Report

Men's Basketball
The men's basketball team defeated Serra 55-46 in their WCAL home opener this weekend. The Monarchs came out strong in the first quarter and were up 13-6 and then built on that lead, taking a 25-18 lead into halftime. The team played strong defensively throughout and was able to put away the Padres in the fourth quarter taking home a 55-46 win. Junior Donovan Wilson's 14 points led the Monarchs while sophomore Joseph Vaughn chipped in 10 points and senior Mike Diaz recorded another "double-double," notching 10 points and 10 rebounds. The men look to continue their winning ways at home as they take on Valley Christian Wednesday night.

Men's Soccer
The men's soccer team beat the Riordan Crusaders at the Beach Chalet Soccer Park in Golden Gate Park this weekend with a score of 9-1. The Monarchs had an impressive offensive game with junior Jake Serpa scoring four goals, junior Jay Houston capturing two, and sophomore Oscar Toulet, junior Jota Yamaguchi, and senior Makenna Pendleton with one each. The game was a great team effort as the offense did a tremendous job at passing the ball while the defense shut down the Crusaders. The victory puts the team second in the WCAL with a 1-0-1 record. Currently, the Monarchs are ranked No. 2 in the CCS by Prep2Prep.

Women's Soccer
The women's soccer team secured a 1-0 win against Sacred Heart Cathedral in a WCAL clash this weekend. Rain and wind didn't dampen the team's spirit as the Monarchs took on the Fighting Irish at the Beach Chalet Soccer Park in Golden Gate Park. Freshman keeper Julia Alvarez made an amazing one-handed save in the first half of the game. She prevented the opponents from scoring any goals during the entire match, a feat that marked her third clean sheet of the season. Senior Amaya Zabalza scored the winning goal in the 46th minute of the game, bringing the team a hard-fought victory.

New Financial Aid Information Due February 6th

Archbishop Mitty High School, under the auspices of the Diocese of San Jose, is pleased to introduce our new financial aid management company, FACTS, which will collect and evaluate levels of financial aid need for the 2017-2018 school year. FACTS purchased PSAS earlier this year and as our returning families will see, most of the information, guidelines, and documentation will be similar to the format of the PSAS application.

All families requesting financial aid will be directed to our website to create an account with FACTS. Applications must be submitted online. Supporting documentation, including 2016 W-2s and 2015 federal tax returns, should be uploaded, faxed, or mailed. This is a secure online process, where you will provide a username and a password. After creating your account, you can login whenever it is convenient. Once logged in, you can fill out the application; update, change, and save information; track your progress; and communicate directly with helpful and knowledgeable FACTS staff members. The application is easy to navigate and is available in English and Spanish.

Only one application per household is required. If you are a returning family, you will be able to log in to your 2016-2017 PSAS application for reference. Financial aid applications are now available through our website, mitty.com, and are due February 6th. Families who want to be considered for financial aid for the 2017-2018 school year are encouraged to apply. Financial aid is awarded on a need-basis only.

Adult Spirituality Series: Beginnings - Looking at an Ancient Text
with New Eyes

Thursday, February 9th
6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Archbishop Mitty High School Chapel

You are cordially invited to join us in the tradition of Catholic biblical scholarship, as we highlight the importance of historical and cultural context in interpreting Scripture. Using this approach, we will explore perhaps one the most well known but arguably one of the most misinterpreted biblical texts: the creation accounts in Genesis. The evening's discussion will conclude with a discussion of the theological implications that arise from the narrative and what they might mean for us as persons of faith today. Mrs. Christina McDougall, AMHS religious studies teacher, will be our guest lecturer. The evening will begin with drinks and light hor d'oeuvres at 6:30 p.m. in the Monarch Room. Please note the change in location from our event in October. RSVP here.
