A Message for the Holidays

Dear Friends,

The Christmas season is one filled with traditions. For example, in my family we always cut down our Christmas tree the day after Thanksgiving. And my son (who’s now 25) and I always find time to sit down together and watch National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, while quoting most of the lines along with the characters.

At Archbishop Mitty we have our Christmas traditions as well. The Christmas rally—which always has a wonderful feeling of warmth and silliness—is highlighted every year by the distribution of gifts by Santa (aka Mr. Hudelson) and Mrs. Claus (aka Mr. Motroni). These gifts are the results of wishes submitted by students for their classmates and teachers. Over the years they have included dates to dances, puppies, pictures taken with firemen, get-out-of-detention free cards, and even a toupee for yours truly. This year a student received a baby pig as part of a larger gift of an entire petting zoo for the whole student body (for the day only).

Christmas traditions at Mitty also include our annual participation in Christmas-in-the-Park, with the Jazz Band, Jazz Choir, and Exodus spreading holiday cheer for three hours. And, most importantly, we always focus the community’s attention on the true meaning of the season at our traditional advent liturgy. This year we celebrated Mary, the Queen of Peace, and Jesus, the Prince of Peace. Students prayed for peace in fourteen different languages ranging from Spanish to Mandarin to Finnish. And junior Joyah Spangler delivered an articulate and heartfelt reflection on the personal importance of peace to her this Christmas (with her brother in Iraq). She then taught the student body to sing the “war is over” refrain to “Happy Christmas (War is Over)” by John Lennon. Then, in a very moving manner, the student body, faculty and staff joined with Exodus in singing the song.

No matter what your family traditions are, I pray that your Christmas season is filled with joy and that God blesses you and your families with love and peace.

Merry Christmas 2007,
Tim Brosnan Principal

Advent Happenings on Campus

The liturgical theme for the month of December is "What the World Needs: Faith." As the calendar year comes to an end, the church year begins and we look at our relationship with God, how we can strengthen this relationship, and the ways we can increasingly trust and place our faith in Jesus. We celebrate especially the birth of Jesus, Our Savior, on Christmas and his coming into our lives in a new way this year. As part of our Advent preparation, on Wednesday, December 5th and Thursday, December 6th, we will celebrate our annual Advent Reconciliation Service. Together with their Religious Studies and Philosophy classes, students are given the opportunity to examine their relationship with God and, for those who wish, to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation. On Wednesday, December 12, at 9:55 am, the entire Archbishop Mitty community will gather for our all-school Advent Liturgy in the Fien Gymnasium. Our prayer will celebrate waiting with Mary for the birth of Jesus, as well as honoring her appearance to us as Our Lady of Guadalupe. This year we are fortunate enough to have our liturgy fall on the actual Feast of Our Lady.

AMHS Class of 2007 Shines on ACT Test!

The ACT test is a national test taken by college bound high school students seeking university admission. Many members of the AMHS Class of 2007 took the ACT in addition to the SAT. These AMHS seniors compare very favorably with the 61,830 college bound high school seniors who took the ACT in California. AMHS students are clearly better prepared for college coursework. ACT Research has shown that it is the rigor of coursework - rather than the simple number of courses - that has the greatest impact on ACT performance and college readiness. The AMHS curriculum clearly prepares students for college success.

Percent of ACT-tested Students ready for College-Level Coursework

II title and beat fellow FAB 50 ranked squad Foothill of Pleasanton twice.
