Parent Reflections

Tessie Barrera-Scharaga, Parent of Gabby Scharaga ‘08
Coming from her small K-8 school to the larger Mitty campus could've been daunting for Gabrielle. She literally grew up with the same group of kids she started with in kindergarten! As the only local school offering a double immersion program, her school was a tight-knit community.  Upon her arrival at Mitty, she was excited to find out about LASU (Latin American Student Union) and signed up for it.  Having a group that shared some of the same cultural traits and interests was instrumental in allowing her to make a smooth transition into the larger student body. Gabrielle has helped coordinate many of the group activities since her freshman year. What she enjoys the most is the sense of camaraderie that exists within the members of the club, the opportunities to be of service, and the satisfaction of being able to introduce aspects of her culture to the larger Mitty community.

Charmaine Jackson, Parent of Kenny Jackson ‘08
In the three years that my son Kenny has attended Archbishop Mitty, I have been blown away by the progress he has made academically, socially, spiritually and athletically.   Kenny’s progress is a testament to the level of commitment Archbishop Mitty makes to students of all ethnicities.  Kenny’s grades improved year by year, and his grade point average has gone up 1.5 points. I had always known that Mitty had high expectations and outcomes for its student body.  More than all of the above, I believe that Mitty embraces its students and parents.  It is an accomplished high school that bonds the parents, faculty and student body.  It is the best investment and contribution I’ve made to a balanced educational experience for my son.  We feel privileged to be a part of the Mitty family.

Shanta Stewart, Parent of Kayla Pitre ‘08
As I reflect on Kayla’s experience at Mitty, I realize that “what Mitty means” simply cannot be generalized in a few short sentences.  This experience is one of passion, compassion, and inspiration. The thoughts that resonate most are “Blessed” and “Open Door.” Mitty has introduced us to a community; a sense of belonging that has superseded all expectations. We have been able to grow spiritually, physically and emotionally. The values of love, peace, joy, hope, goodness, forgiveness, and prayer are reinforced. We have made lifelong friends, thanks to carpools, volunteering, and Monarch Madness.  The support of teachers, counselors, and administrators is second to none. Teacher-student conversations are candid, stimulating, and invoke intellectual thought and responses on both sides. The students are united.  The teachers are united. The parents are united.  The opportunity and potential for growth is embraced.  The experience is unique. It has truly been a blessing and has opened many doors.  As a student, Kayla is reminded that she is connected to “something larger” than herself and it is her obligation to give back.  Kayla has founded and co-founded student clubs, traveled to South Africa, and served as a school ambassador along with many other duties.   She and fellow students know what is expected of them and are challenged to do more, do better.  If you knock, Mitty will answer the door.
