Purpose and Policies

PURPOSE

The Department of Athletics is committed to enriching campus life through a program of interscholastic athletics and to promoting the development of qualities in the student-athlete that will serve the participating individual and the community.
Towards that end, the Department offers competition for men and women as part of the educational program of the school. Its goals are...

• to instill in the student-athlete a sense of responsibility by demanding consistently high standards of behavior and making the student- athlete aware and respectful of the needs of others;
• to engender commitment in the student-athlete by directing him/her to an acceptance of the goals of the team and an appreciation of the needs of his/her teammates, coaches, opponents, and officials;
• to nurture unselfishness in the student-athlete by requiring that his her actions on and off the playing field be consistent with the goals of the team as a whole and not be directed towards individual honors;
• to generate in the student-athlete a willingness to sacrifice his/her time and energy towards the fulfillment of shared goals;
• to further a sense of personal discipline on the part of the student athlete by demanding abstention from activities that limit his/her athletic, academic, and personal potential.

Tryouts and formation of teams occur a few weeks prior to a particular season. For more information, contact the Athletic Director.

ELIGIBILITY

To be eligible to participate in interscholastic contests, a student at Archbishop Mitty must meet all of the following criteria:

1. have a cumulative G.P.A. of 2.0 or higher in the preceding academic quarter;
2. have passed a minimum of 20 units in the preceding quarter;
3. be enrolled in 25 or more units during the period of his/her sports season;
4. complete the Department Health Form and have it signed by a physician and parent;
5. complete the Department Participation Regulations Form (pdf) and have it signed by a parent.

A student who fails to satisfy (4) or (5) above may not participate in any practices, scrimmages, or contests.

A student who fails to satisfy any of (1), (2), or (3) above is immediately academically ineligible for participation in contests or scrimmages. Notification of such will come from the Associate Principal. Students who are academically ineligible may continue to practice and attend games with their teams. However, they may not be excused from any class time for athletic purposes.

Archbishop Mitty offers a program of Athletic Participation Probation which affords students the opportunity to request one quarter of probation which would allow them to participate in contests despite failing to meet requirements (1), (2), or (3). Requests for Athletic Participation Probation are submitted in writing to the Ineligibility Committee. The Committee is comprised of a member of the Academic Council, the Associate Principal, and the Athletic Director. Probation is granted only to students who satisfy the following criteria:

• there is no evidence of widespread low grades;
• the student’s conduct has been above reproach;
• the student has improved or is presently improving his or her academic standing;
• the student has no history of excessive absenteeism or tardiness;
• the student’s parents concur with the student’s request for Probation.

PHYSICAL EXAMS

For the convenience of the student-athlete, the Department offers one opportunity during the summer when low-cost physical exams are provided. Contact the Department for more information.

TRANSPORTATION

With rare exception, all transportation to and from athletic contests for team members is provided in AMHS vehicles. Transportation by any other means is permissible only with the consent of the supervising staff member and as a result of written request by a student-athlete’s parent.

FACILITIES USE

Use of the AMHS facilities is regulated by the school office and is allowed only with the expressed permission of the school. Any student use must be with the permission of the school and supervised by a staff member.

FINANCES/FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

Many programs involve some level of financial commitment by the student-athlete. This takes the form of “Spirit Packs” which include practice apparel and other items necessary for a particular team or program.

The Department, in consultation with the Business Office, will make financial assistance available to families who are in need of it to meet the financial burdens of participation in Department programs.

STUDENT TRAINER PROGRAM

The Athletic Department offers a program in Athletic Training. The program is supervised by the AMHS Trainer and it meets on a regular schedule. Interested students should contact the Department of Athletics.

Students who complete the program are encouraged to function as student trainers within the Department of Athletics. However, students are not required to take the program to be student trainers. Those students who have not taken the program but want to be a trainer should contact the AMHS Trainer. Student Trainers are supervised by the AMHS Trainer and provide medical and rehabilitation assistance to AMHS teams.
