FAQ

How many teams does Mitty field?

We have three teams: varsity, junior varsity, and freshmen.

When are tryouts?

Tryouts begin on January 19. Tryouts for the Junior Varsity and Freshmen teams begin on February 5. Any sophomore, junior or senior may try out for the Varsity team. All freshman must wait until February 5. Email Bill Hutton at Bill Hutton with any questions regarding tryouts or team placement.

Do I have to practice on Saturdays and holidays, including Easter vacation?

Practices are often held on Saturdays and school Holidays.  There will never be practice on a Sunday.  All teams will be practicing and/or playing over Spring vacation.  Players are expected to be at all practices and games.  Conflicts should be discussed with Coach Hutton well in advance of the conflict whenever possible.

Are their cuts?

Yes, there are cuts on every level.  Roster sizes are based on the number of players that the coaches feel they can effectively teach.  Roster size will, therefore vary from year to year and team to team.  Rosters range anywhere from 16 -25 players.

What does it cost to play?

Players purchase a “Spirit Pack” when they are selected for a team.  This includes various pieces of essential equipment.  The cost is normally around $200 per player per year, but can be less if materials from the previous season are still usable.  Players buy their own bats, gloves, and shoes. Players should buy BLACK baseball shoes.  Any questions regarding necessary purchases should be directed to Coach Hutton.  He would be happy to answer any questions.

What if I have a question about playing in college?

You should contact Coach Hutton ASAP and arrange to have a meeting.  There are many confusing and conflicting factors that need to be considered.  The experience and success of our coaching staff makes us uniquely qualified to help our athletes in this area.

What if I have a question about the program?

Feel free to contact Bill Hutton regarding any questions that you may have regarding the program.  He can be reached at (408) 342-4273.  He would be happy to speak with you.

Is there a summer program?

Yes, there is a summer program.  Returning players from the varsity plus selected players from the junior varsity and freshman teams are invited to play in a 5 week summer program.  This program is not mandatory and players are encouraged to pursue any summer involvement that they choose.  Most players play on a number of summer teams and we try to be flexible and help the players manage their commitments.

We are also adding a second summer team comprised of members of our freshmen team and some junior varsity players.  This will be a U16 team and will play a 30 game schedule from Memorial Day through mid July.  This team will be attending the USA U16 Junior Olympics in Peoria, Arizona as part of their schedule.  We are very excited about this new opportunity.

Is there a fall program?

There is a fall conditioning program that meets after school three days a week on the track.  All athletes not currently playing a fall sport are encouraged to attend to help prepare for the upcoming season, but if there is a concern, contact Coach Hutton.

Are there any camps that I can attend?

Archbishop Mitty offers summer camps in a variety of sports.  We offer baseball camps for two age groups, 3rd through 6th graders and 7th through 9th graders. The 2008 summer camps will be held between June 16 and July 7. Please check Mitty’s main athletic page in the spring to download a summer camp form.

We also offer a Holiday camp called, “The Baseball Experience.”  This is an event for 7th and 8th graders and their parents.  Over 90 campers and their parents attended this event on December 15, 2007.  They received instruction from the Archbishop Mitty coaching staff and former Monarchs that are currently in professional or college baseball as players or coaches. At this Holiday Camp, CCS Commissioner Nancy Lazenby-Blaser presented information to parents regarding exactly what high school coaches can and can not do with regard to working with 7th and 8th graders. This is the CCS policy (pdf) and regulations regarding: “undue influence”.

Campers and their parents also heard from current major league baseball players Troy Tulowitzki and Randy Winn about the benefits of being a multi sport athlete. The 2008 Baseball experience will be on December 13, 2008.  Contact Bill Hutton for information on the 2008 event.  Other camps and clinics will always be advertised on the main athletics page.

Can a freshmen make the varsity or the junior varsity?

Freshmen can make the varsity team.  They still must wait until the freshmen start date of February 5 and then the coaches will evaluate their placement.  It is not uncommon for freshmen to be placed on the junior varsity or varsity teams.  But is handled on a case by case basis. Generally speaking, players are placed at the level that will best benefit the overall program.

How long is the season and what is the time commitment?

The high school season begins on January 20 for the varsity and February 5 for the Junior Varsity and Freshmen teams.  The season ends after the first week of May for the lower levels and the end of May for the varsity, depending on whether of not the varsity advances to the CCS playoffs.

How do I find out if a game has been cancelled due to rain?

Normally games are not cancelled until noon, at the earliest. Weather conditions can change in a hurry and we try to wait as long as possible to make the final decision.  When a decision is made we will announce the decision to the student body and students are asked to contact their parents. The Archbishop Mitty website is also updated as soon as a decision is made regarding a cancellation or reschedule.

What if I have a question about my son’s playing time?

Playing time is solely the decision of the coaches.  There is no guaranteed playing time at the high school level.  However, parents are encouraged to have their son talk with his coach and discuss his role on the team.  After this step is taken, the player’s coaches would be happy to meet with the parents and the athlete.  The head coach of the program, Bill Hutton, will be in attendance at all those meetings.

What are the academic requirements?

Athletes must maintain at least a 2.0 GPA during the school year to be eligible to participate in extracurriculars.

Can baseball players play other sports as well?

Absolutely!  We encourage all our players to play other sports.  We believe that this cross training is crucial to developing baseball players.  Players that play a winter sport can come out for tryouts when their winter sport is over and will be granted 3 days of tryouts to make a team.
