FAQ

How do I tryout to be on the diving team?

Divers will try out the week of February 4th. More information will available soon. Please contact Coach Miller with any questions.

How long do tryouts last?

According to Department of Athletics policy, every athlete is granted a minimum of three program tryout days. This means that a swimmer has three days in which to be evaluated by the coaching staff. All players should attend every practice unless previously excused by Coach Miller and/or Coach Greene. If a swimmer attends tryouts on a Monday, fails to appear Tuesday, and reappears on Wednesday, Wednesday constitutes their third day of tryouts, and therefore is eligible to be cut from the team. Remember, all athletes must have their yearly physical on file with the Department of Athletics to tryout for a team.

How are cuts done?

The coaching staff understands that tryouts are a delicate matter for all involved and seeks to compile teams in the most professional manner possible. All team membership decisions will be made with Coach Miller and the level coach in an individual meeting with each student. At this time, we will explain our reasons for the decision and the options available to the student-athlete, as well as answer any questions he or she might have at that time.

Why are the sizes of the swim teams restricted?

Due to the number of coaches available to the program as determined by West Catholic Athletic League rules, we limit the roster to ensure a good athlete-to-coach ratio suitable for teaching and learning as defined by the varsity head coach.

Why is the number of Archbishop Mitty swimming teams limited to four?

In accordance with West Catholic Athletic League Rules, we offer Varsity and Junior Varsity for Women, and Frosh/Soph and Varsity for Men.

Who is eligible for the teams?

As defined by West Catholic Athletic league rules, freshmen are eligible for both the junior varsity (or frosh/soph for the men) and varsity teams. Seniors are only eligible for the varsity teams.  For the mens’ teams, juniors are only eligible for the varsity team. The coaching staff will determine each swimmer’s team placement at the conclusion of all tryouts.

What is the criteria used to evaluate each individual swimmer during tryouts?

I. Factors Considered

All coaches from the Archbishop Mitty Swimming & Diving Program will evaluate all student-athletes during the tryout period. It is important that all potential student-athletes be aware of the criteria used by the coaching staff in assessing swimmers and compiling teams. The following is a listing of the evaluation criteria used (in no particular order):

1. Character: How hard does he/she work? How open is he/she to input/correction from others? Is he/she prompt? Does he/she demonstrate qualities that lead to a “team first” attitude? Does he/she display leadership qualities? Does he/she display a desire to improve? Does he/she exhibit the competitive qualities that help lend intensity and focus to the team?

2. Skills: Does he/she demonstrate ability and potential in the skills necessary for success in swimming (can swim all four strokes, flip-turns, starts, proper technique, breathing pattern) at the level at which Archbishop Mitty teams compete?

3. Time Trials: Tryouts will also consist of time trials in each of the four competitive strokes (Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Freestyle). The length of the time trial is fifty-yards, and each swimmer will be ranked (boys and girls separately) according to their time in each of the strokes. The time trials will be a determinant factor in making the teams.

II.  Factors Not Considered

1. Class level: We do not reserve spots dependent upon level in school (e.g., we do not reserve varsity spots for seniors).

2. Returning Swimmers: Returning swimmers are not guaranteed a spot on any team. All swimmers must go through the try-out evaluation process every season.

3. Club Participation: Archbishop Mitty is not affiliated with any other swim organizations; as such, participation in these activities is not a consideration.
