How do I tryout for men’s’ golf?

Tryouts will consist of 1 or 2 days on the driving range and 2 or 3 nine-hole rounds of golf.  The number of tryout sessions will depend on the number of athletes and the weather.  Once you register for tryouts (on January 17th at 2:45pm in Room 107) you will be scheduled to go on designated days (Monday-Thursday).  Tryouts are limited to 8-12 golfers per day.  Since times and spaces are limited, if you miss an assigned day (unexcused) that will count as one of your tryout days.  The weekly tryout list will be posted in Room 107.  Tryouts will begin on January 22nd and conclude by Thursday, February 15th.  Range days will start at 3:15 and conclude about 4:30.  Course play will start around 3:15 and end around 6:00.  Winter varsity athletes involved in playoffs and some freshmen might still be involved in tryouts until the end of February.

How do I know if I have made the team?

The most important determining factor as to whether you make the team is your golf score for the nine-hole rounds of golf.  The lower your score the better your chance for making the team. The scores vary from year to year.  In recent years those golfers that consistently scored below 3 over par (39 at San Jose Municipal) made the Varsity Team. Those golfers that scored consistently between 4 and 9 over par (40 to 45 at San Jose Municipal) made the Junior Varsity.  Tryouts for this year's Varsity will be extremely competitive.  A Varsity player should show that he is capable of shooting par (36) at San Jose Municipal.

What is Mitty’s home course?

All tryouts will take place at San Jose Municipal Golf Course, our home course.  There will be a van provided for those golfers that don’t have transportation (usually freshmen and sophomores).  Since tryouts are after school you are allowed to arrange your own transportation to the golf course.  It might be wise to familiarize yourself with the course by playing the front nine holes a few times on your own before the end of January.

Do players who were on the Varsity and JV teams last year automatically make this year’s teams?

Those golfers that were on the Varsity team or the Junior Varsity team last year are not guaranteed a spot on the team this year.  Everyone must try out and every golfer will have an equal opportunity to make the team.  Preference is not given for past experience.  Again, golf scores at the tryouts are the main determining factor.

What is the structure of team competitions and how many people make the team?

Six golfers play in a match.  We travel with 1-2 alternates per match. The optimum number for the Varsity team is eight golfers, and for the junior varsity it is ten to twelve golfers. These numbers do vary from year to year.

What is the attire for tryouts, practices and team competitions?

You are free to wear what you want (within the AMHS dress code) on the driving range.  When you play on the course you should wear golf shoes, a collared shirt and long pants. Bring a jacket/sweatshirt with you.  It gets real cold at about 5 PM on the seventh hole.

How much does it cost to play on either the JV or Varsity team?

All scheduled golfing (driving range and course play) is paid for by AMHS.  There is no cost to the student.  For golfers that make the team there will be a required “spirit pack” purchase that usually includes a uniform golf shirt, pants and hat.  The cost varies from year to year, but is usually less that $100.

Who should I contact if I have any questions?

All inquires about men’s golf or tryouts should be made to Mr. John Mosunic, the Varsity head coach. He can be reached at mosunic@mitty.com or 408.252.6610. In addition, room 107 will be the Men’s Golf “office”.   Men’s Golf team information will be posted on the door of Room 107 and on a bulletin board in Room 107 . If you have no place to store your golf clubs during the school day, you may store them behind the desk in Room 107.  Don’t leave your clubs unattended around campus.
