FAQ
When are tryouts?
Tryouts typically begin the third Monday in August and last for 5 days. Please consult your summer mailing from the school for date specifics.
What kind of equipment do I need for tryouts?
Please wear comfortable tennis/athletic attire. Players should bring their own rackets, white-soled tennis shoes, and water bottle. Also consider bringing running shoes for conditioning.
How many players are usually kept on the team and are their “cuts”?
Archbishop Mitty fields 2 tennis teams; a junior varsity and a varsity team. Since the number of coaches available to the program is determined by league rules, the JV and Varsity rosters are limited to ensure a good player-to-coach ratio suitable for teaching and learning as defined by the varsity head coach.
Is there a chance I could make one of the teams even though I have never played tennis before?
Mitty tennis is typically one of the top teams in the league. Varsity players are often USTA NorCal ranked or have a strong competitive playing history in tournaments or at the club level. Players trying out for the JV team should feel comfortable playing long points from any spot on the court.
Can a freshman make the varsity team?
Freshmen are eligible to make both the junior varsity and the varsity team.
How long is the season and what is the time commitment?
The women’s tennis season season typically runs from the 3rd Monday in August through mid-November. The Varsity high school season concludes with the CCS Singles/Doubles Tournament, which usually falls on the Monday/Tuesday before Thanksgiving. Both the Junior Varsity and the Varsity teams practice Monday-Friday for 2 hours in the pre-season and Monday-Friday for 1.5 hours once league matches start.
How do I find out if a match has been postponed due to rain?
The Athletic Director (in consultation with the coaching staff) ultimately makes the decision as to whether a match should be postponed. The decision is usually made between 1:00pm-2:00pm to allow time to contact the appropriate personnel from the visiting team. Contact the Department of Athletics at 408.342.4350 after 1:00pm if you have any questions.
Where are Mitty home matches played?
Home matches are played on Mitty’s tennis courts located in the east parking lot.
