FAQ

When are tryouts?

Tryouts typically begin the second Monday in August and last for 5 days. Please consult your summer mailing from the school for date specifics.

What kind of equipment do I need for tryouts?

Please wear comfortable workout clothes, shinguards, cleats, and a mouthguard. Field hockey sticks will be provided for those who do not own their own sticks.

How many players are usually kept on the team and are their “cuts”?

Archbishop Mitty fields 2 field hockey teams; a junior varsity and a varsity team. Since the number of coaches available to the program is determined by league rules, the JV and Varsity rosters are limited to ensure a good player-to-coach ratio suitable for teaching and learning as defined by the varsity head coach. This number typically varies between 18-25 players per team.

Is there a chance I could make one of the teams even though I have never played field hockey before?

Of course! More than 80% of players who tryout their freshman year have never played before.

Can a freshman make the varsity team?

Freshman are eligible for making both the junior varsity and the varsity team.

How long is the season and what is the time commitment?

The field hockey season typically runs from the 2nd Monday in August through early November. The Varsity high school season concludes with the CCS Championship, which usually falls on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. Both the Junior Varsity and the Varsity teams practice Monday-Saturday for 2.5 hours in the pre-season and Monday-Friday for 2.5 hours once league games start.

How do I find out if a game has been cancelled due to rain?

The Athletic Director (in consultation with the coaching staff) ultimately makes the decision as to whether a game should be cancelled. Every attempt is made to play the game unless it is believed it would be dangerous to do so. The decision is usually made between 12:00pm-1:00pm to allow time to contact the appropriate personnel from the visiting team. Contact the Department of Athletics at 408.342.4350 after 12:00pm if you have any questions.

Where are Mitty home games played?

Home games are played on Mitty’s east field where the freshman baseball field and the Joanne Gallucci softball field are also located. Parking is available in the east lot near the tennis courts.
