Giving Opportunities

"Learning is not attained by chance," a wise soul once said. "It must be sought for with ardor and attended to with diligence." For the past 40 years, the students of Archbishop Mitty have benefited from the generosity of individuals who support the school's mission, understand the importance of a good education, and derive great satisfaction from helping others achieve their educational goals. Archbishop Mitty High School cannot exist financially on tuition payments alone. We invite you to consider how you might contribute a lasting and valuable gift towards Mitty's continued excellence. Any one of these opportunities for giving ensures the continuation of Archbishop Mitty's commitment to excellence in Catholic education for young men and women.

1. Gifts to Endowment

Establishing an endowment for scholarship and/or program support honors the past and secures the future. Your gift is prudently invested and carefully managed for growth. The principal is preserved in perpetuity, and the earnings are used each year to support the students and programs meeting the criteria established by the administration and the donor.

2. The Annual Fund

A portion of the cost of our operations must be provided by our Parent Pledge Program. Customarily these may be a direct gift of cash or pledge contributions over a specified period of time.

2. Matching Gifts

Many corporations are now willing to support private secondary education by matching your gift, often as much as two or three times your contribution. Your employer can advise you if your company has a matching gift program.

3. Securities

The best stocks to donate are those that have increased greatly in value, particularly those producing a low yield. If you donate property that has risen in value and that you've held for more than one year, you pay no capital gains tax on the transaction. You can also take an income tax deduction for the full fair market value of the stock.
If you have stock losses, sell the stock yourself to realize the loss and take the deduction for tax purposes. Then generate a charitable contribution deduction by donating the cash proceeds of the sale to us. You can download Stock Transfer Instructions (pdf form) to assist you.

4. Special Events

Underwriting and sponsorship of events such as our annual Black & Gold Gala, the Mitty Auction, or Alumni & Friends Golf Tournament serve to defray the school's expenses of producing these fundraising events. Your contributions are fully tax deductible.

6. Life Income Gifts

By placing property into any one of a variety of life income gift vehicles, you can receive an income for yourself and/or another person, and still make a generous gift to us. With a charitable remainder trust, for example, at the end of a specified period (such as the donor's or the beneficiary's life-time or a term of 20 year), the remainder of the trust assets would be given to us.

Charitable remainder trusts are built with assets you contribute, such as securities, appreciated property or cash. Once placed in trust, the assets can be sold (avoiding capital gains tax) and the proceeds reinvested to produce a higher yield. You also receive an immediate charitable deduction on you income taxes.

7. Bequests

In providing for the school in a person's will the donor's lawyer should be instructed that our corporate title is "Roman Catholic Bishop of San Jose, a corporation sole, for the benefit of Archbishop Mitty High School."

8. At the Time of Death

During a bereavement period, friends often see an appropriate means to express sympathy. The following message in the obituary of the deceased provides an avenue to make a meaningful and thoughtful gift. "Memorial gifts may be made to Archbishop Mitty High School, 5000 Mitty Avenue, San Jose, CA 95129."

9. Memorial and Honorarium Gifts

Memorial and honorarium gifts offer an opportunity to honor a relative, friend, or a business associate. Any special occasion--birthday, anniversary, graduation, and other accomplishments are times to remember.

10. Shopping through eScrip supports Archbishop Mitty High School

Participation in this program is a hassle-free way for schools and groups that support children’s programs to raise funds through everyday purchases. eScrips has created a system that rewards customer loyalty by contributing a percentage of purchases to Archbishop Mitty High School. Parents, teachers, alumni, friends and families are encouraged to register their credit, debit and grocery club cards as supporters. Upon receipt of registration, a percentage of all purchases made at participating merchants will be given back to Archbishop Mitty. It is easy to use. Simply swipe your registered cards at time of purchase. There is a large and growing base of both local and national merchant partners. Families can sign up online and even shop online. Contributions are based on “everyday” purchases and funds are distributed monthly. Log on to www.eScrip.com and identify our school as the beneficiary when registering.
