Honor Societies
National Honor Society and California Scholarship Federation are the only two honor societies that AMHS is affiliated with. Neither NHS nor CSF requires dues or payment of any kind. AMHS will purchase stoles and cords for those students who meet AMHS’s qualifications to graduate with those honors.
National Honor Society and California Scholarship Federation are nationally recognized scholarship organizations. NHS and CSF proudly host an annual drive that runs in conjunction with AMHS drives in November and/or December. NHS and CSF members are often asked to represent AMHS at AMHS sponsored events such as: Back to School Night, College Fairs, Graduation, and Freshman Orientation. Details for membership in each organization are below.
California Scholarship Federation – based on Academic GPA
(Membership is based on the Semester Academic GPA, which excludes P.E. and Athletics)
Founded in 1921, the California Scholarship Federation is the oldest scholarship institution in the state of California. The California Scholarship Federation (CSF) emphasizes high standards of scholarship and community service for California high school students. The motto of CSF is “Scholarship for Service”.
In order to become a member, the student must complete the Family Connection Survey each semester the student is eligible. CSF uses a point system, which is equivalent to a 3.60 AMHS Academic Grade Point Average. To secure eligibility for CSF membership, a student must earn sufficient points from pre-approved course lists. The California Scholarship Federation has approved all AMHS classes.
In order to wear a gold CSF stole at graduation students must retain membership by:
- Signing the roster each semester
- Maintaining their GPA for any four semesters beginning with the second semester sophomore year.
Gold stoles and the gold CSF seal for your diploma are distributed the week before finals.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is CSF?
CSF stands for California Scholarship Federation. It is an academic honors society for active and academically minded students. Being a member of CSF looks great on college applications, gets you special recognition at graduation, and can provide scholarships to active members.
2. How do I join?
At the beginning of sophomore year and every semester thereafter, eligible members for CSF will be emailed and asked to complete a four-question on-line survey on Family Connection that automatically registers them as a CSF member. Freshmen cannot apply for membership until the start of their sophomore year.
3. Is it difficult to be admitted to CSF?
Students are admitted into CSF solely based on their Academic Cumulative semester grade of 3.60 and above.
4. Is there a service requirement?
No, you do not have to complete an extra service requirement to be a member. However, CSF provides many opportunities to get involved in AMHS service projects. Participation brings rewards. You will get to know people better, have fun, earn CSF service hours, and have a chance at some scholarships.
5. If I have more questions, whom do I talk to?
The CSF/NHS moderator is Mrs. Janie Falcone.
National Honor Society – based on Cumulative GPA
(Membership is based on the Semester Total GPA)
Membership in the National Honor Society is both an honor and a responsibility. This Society is recognized nationwide, and membership may be transferred to other schools and to other states. Students in the eleventh and twelfth grades who achieve a 3.60 grade point average each semester are eligible to seek membership status. Students are expected to maintain and demonstrate the qualities of scholarship, service, leadership, and character.
Students with a cumulative GPA of 3.60 or higher are eligible for NHS membership after second semester sophomore year. Membership begins fall semester of their junior year. The beginning of junior year is the only time membership can start. Students need to know their GPA and take the initiative to sign up through their Family Connection account each semester. Announcements are made notifying students when the on-line application is open and are given a three-week period to sign up.
A list of eligible juniors and seniors can be found in the Counseling Center the second week of each semester. Eligible members are also notified via an email to their mittymonarch account to complete the four -question survey on Family Connection. This survey acts as a signature and commitment to NHS and must be completed every semester.
Unlike CSF, if a student’s GPA falls below a cumulative 3.60 GPA, they are no longer eligible for membership.
In order to wear a gold NHS cord at graduation students must retain membership by:
- Completing the Family Connection NHS/CSF survey each semester.
- Maintaining their cumulative GPA of 3.60 or higher for three consecutive semesters: fall and spring junior year and first semester senior year.
Gold cords are distributed the week before finals.
